    Scaling Ideas Worth Spreading

SMU Simmons reached out on March 31 with a question about old drone footage.By April 7, that question had become a full-scope production. A 90 to 120 second feature film honoring Dr. Jill Allor, plus 2 to 3 vertical social cutdowns, plus aerial coverage of campus, all due April 28. Three to five interview subjects. One shoot day. A team based 600 miles away on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. And a brand-new vendor relationship with one of the South's most respected universities, complete with a financial-officer review and a multi-step procurement approval. Most agencies would have passed. We pulled out the calendar.

    The Ask

A tight deadline. An immediate yes.

The Director of Marketing for the Simmons School of Education and Human Development reached out with a tight window and a meaningful ask: a feature video honoring Dr. Jill Allor's career in early literacy, due April 28. We said yes within the hour. A week later, we loaded the car and drove to Dallas.

    Building the Sprint

Quote on Tuesday. Locked by Wednesday.

A rush turnaround does not mean cutting corners. It means making fewer decisions twice. We scoped the feature film, the social cutdowns, and the drone coverage, then answered the pricing inquiry with the four questions that turn a brief into a real plan. How many interview subjects. What aspect ratios. What existing footage. Drone or no drone. By Wednesday the production calendar was locked and a shoot-day prep document was in the SMU team's hands. Operational craft is part of the creative offering, not separate from it.

    One Day in Dallas

    Sunrise to studio lights.

Tuesday, April 14 gave us a single day to capture the arc of a career. The morning was spent inside the Simmons School with Dr. Allor and the colleagues who have worked alongside her, walking through the decades of research and instruction that have shaped how early literacy is taught. By afternoon we had moved outdoors to film the campus and its architecture, with the drone gathering the aerial coverage SMU had first asked about back in February. The day ended in the early literacy scholars classroom, where Dr. Allor was doing the same work she has done her entire career, teaching the teachers who will carry her thinking forward.

    The Edit Room

13 days to find the through-line.

Honoring an academic legacy in 90 seconds was a writing problem before it was an editing problem. We watched every interview a couple of times through and paid attention to the themes Dr. Allor's colleagues raised on their own, then built the structure around the language they used most. The color treatment stayed warm without leaning sentimental, and the pacing was deliberate rather than quick. We also wanted the closing moments to belong to her students rather than to us, because that is where her career actually lives. From the long-form piece, we shaped three vertical cutdowns in 4:5 with embedded captions, each one following a different emotional thread, so SMU's social team had something to share with audiences across the platforms they use.

    Delivered

April 28. On time. On story.

We delivered every file on schedule. Alongside the feature film and the social cutdowns, we also handed over a bonus folder of the high-resolution drone assets SMU had originally asked about back in March, which were ready in time to support the separate school branding video already in development. SMU received more than they had asked for, on the day they had asked for it, from a team that drove 600 miles to make it happen. What started as a single question about some old footage has turned into a relationship we are glad to be a part of, and one we hope to keep building on for a long time.

"Hilltree made the entire process feel easy. They drove in from Mississippi, fit right in with our team, and treated everyone we put in front of them with so much care. The final film captured Dr. Allor's work in a way that genuinely reflects who she is and what Simmons stands for. We're grateful for the partnership and looking forward to what's next."
